Our goal is to help you make your website more successful. We’re a business, so we define success in terms of revenue. Therefore, making your website more successful simply means generating more revenue.
So, how do we do that?
Get More Traffic
Your site makes a certain amount of money per visitor. Therefore, you can obviously increase your revenue simply by getting more visitors. This is usually the first (and frequently the only) approach site owners use to increase their revenue: Get more visitors; generate more revenue.
Generating more traffic isn’t the only way to generate more revenue, though.
Get More Revenue from the Existing Traffic
If you’re receiving a steady flow of visitors to your site at all, there’s a very good chance that they’re not generating as much revenue as they could. I’m not talking about selling them out (you don’t build a long-term business by prostituting your customers), but there are any number of ways to seamlessly generate more revenue from the traffic you’re already getting. Advertising, selling a product (or products), and selling a service are all easy ways for your site to make more money.
Many people tend to skip this step altogether, though. Once they establish a revenue model, they pour all their energy into increasing their traffic and pay little attention to whether they could be making more revenue from the same amount of traffic. Frequently, however, it’s incredibly easy to double or even triple your revenue without getting more visitors.
Know Your Stats
Before you go trying out different things to generate more revenue, though, you need to have some idea of how much revenue is generated by each visitor to your site. Otherwise, your attempts to generate traffic and revenue will largely be shots in the dark and your progress over time will be stilted and uncertain.
It doesn’t have to be complex, though. In fact, a simple spreadsheet that does nothing more than track your daily visitors & revenue and their trend over time will work just fine. You just want to be able to see at a glance what effect that latest change you made actually had.
Conclusion
There are three basic principles to growing your website on which everything else is based:
- Get more traffic.
- Get more revenue from the existing traffic.
- Know your stats.
Keeping these three things in mind all the time will keep you from spinning your wheels on efforts that will never have any effect on your bottom line.
